BIOGRAPHY
Yiselle Santos Rivera is a visionary architect, professor, and organizational leader dedicated to advancing design excellence and inclusive innovation in the built environment. As the Founder and CEO of YSR, LLC, she leads a pioneering consultancy at the intersection of healthcare architecture, intercultural experience design, and organizational change management. With a systems-thinking approach, Yiselle drives transformative business solutions that enhance health, wellness, and equity in communities worldwide.
Born and raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Yiselle’s passion for architecture stems from a deep commitment to culturally aware design solutions and community-driven engagement. She earned a Bachelor of Science from the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras, with a minor in Environmental Design, followed by a Master of Architecture from Syracuse University. She is currently pursuing a Doctorate in Leadership Psychology at William James College, focusing on organizational development and systemic change.
Yiselle’s career spans over two decades, including her tenure as Principal and Global Director of Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (J.E.D.I.) at HKS, Inc. There, she spearheaded firm-wide strategic initiatives, developed the J.E.D.I. framework, and led global impact projects that reshaped how architecture integrates equity, cultural competency, and environmental responsibility. Under her leadership, HKS received industry-wide recognition, including the Human Rights Campaign Foundation’s Corporate Equality Index Equality 100 Award.
As a leading voice in architectural policy and advocacy, Yiselle has served as an AIA and NAAB board member, influencing accreditation policies that ensure equity-driven progress while navigating complex regulatory landscapes. She played a critical role in redefining DEI language in accreditation standards, protecting the future of architectural education and professional growth.
Beyond professional practice, mentorship and advocacy define Yiselle’s leadership. She founded WIELD (Women Inspiring Emerging Leaders in Design), a platform dedicated to elevating women in architecture through mentorship, advocacy, and professional development. She also co-founded LA.IDEA DC, the first Hispanic/Latinx committee within AIA DC, fostering professional growth and visibility for underrepresented architects.
Her global impact extends to advisory roles in major projects, including serving as a J.E.D.I. Liaison for the Austin Transit Partnership’s Transit-Oriented Development and a J.E.D.I. Analyst for Google Experience Design, where she helped develop neurodivergent principles for experiential spaces.
Now, as a candidate for AIA 2026 Vice President / 2027 President-Elect, Yiselle is committed to transforming architectural leadership by focusing on empowering professionals, fostering innovation, and driving policy changes that ensure an equitable, sustainable future for the industry. Her platform emphasizes strengthening mentorship networks, advancing J.E.D.I. practices, and advocating for policies that support emerging professionals and underrepresented voices.
Yiselle’s contributions to academia and industry leadership continue to shape the future of architecture. She currently serves as a Full-Time Adjunct Professor at Howard University, guiding the next generation of architects in pre-design and advanced design studio courses.
Her career is a testament to the power of architecture as a tool for social transformation, and she remains dedicated to creating spaces, policies, and opportunities that cultivate belonging, equity, and innovation.
